Private Fleet Net Zero Turns Unused Private Fleet Backhaul into Profitable Freight Opportunities

Private Fleet Net Zero partnered with Woolpert Digital Innovations to build a platform that helps brokers and third-party logistics providers access private fleet capacity without adding operational complexity.

Business Challenge

Private Fleet Net Zero helps brokers and 3PLs identify unused backhaul capacity within private fleets—trucks owned and operated by the same company that owns the freight. Many of these trucks regularly run empty on return routes, creating widespread inefficiency.

For brokers and 3PLs operating on thin margins, this unused capacity represents missed opportunity. At the same time, reliance on unknown small for-hire carriers increases exposure to freight theft and fraud, making it difficult to improve profitability without adding risk.

Private Fleet Net Zero needed a scalable, data-driven way to surface additional lane and partial-route opportunities along existing routes, enabling brokers to further access trusted private fleet capacity without disrupting carrier operations.

Benefits

Improved Lane Utilization:
In early deployments, customers increased power-lane matching to roughly two-thirds of available lanes, significantly improving backhaul utilization without disrupting routes.

Margin Improvement:
Access to underutilized private fleet capacity enables brokers to secure lower-cost, high-quality capacity and improve profitability.

Lower Risk:
Using private fleet capacity helps reduce exposure to freight theft and fraud, an industry cost estimated at $30B and growing 25% year over year.

“Woolpert is doing things that few, if anyone else, can do. Their expertise stands out, especially for the complex routing problems we’re solving.”

Working With Woolpert

Woolpert Digital Innovations provided technical expertise and delivery support throughout the development of the Private Fleet Net Zero platform. The teams worked closely through regular working sessions to implement complex routing logic and ensure the solution aligned with real-world freight operations. Woolpert’s responsiveness and experience with Google Maps APIs supported rapid iteration and a smooth transition from beta to production.

The Solution

Private Fleet Net Zero partnered with Woolpert Digital Innovations to integrate the Google Maps Platform into its proprietary freight optimization platform. The solution analyzes real-world highway routes between origin and destination points, identifies cities with populations of 50,000 or more along those corridors, and surfaces viable primary, secondary, and partial-route lane opportunities that align with existing carrier routes. This approach enables brokers to match more freight to trusted private fleet capacity, reduce empty miles, and improve profitability without disrupting carrier operations. After launching a beta, the platform is now live, with continued optimization driven by customer feedback.
