Business Challenge
Pachama helps companies invest in nature based carbon projects with confidence. The challenge in the voluntary carbon market is verifying real impact, as companies historically relied on assumptions rather than data. Pachama needed a scalable solution to provide accurate insights and increase transparency.
Benefits
- Efficiency: Google Earth Engine (GEE) accelerates analysis, allowing faster, data-backed project assessments.
- Cost Optimization: Infrastructure improvements reduced cloud costs while maintaining high performance.
- Scalability: AI-powered models and cloud tools support increasing demand.
“We met with Woolpert early on and were quickly impressed by their expertise. Their internal pipelines analyze petabytes of geospatial data, just like ours, so it was a natural fit to talk shop with other engineers solving similar problems.”
Working With Woolpert
“We met with Woolpert early on and were quickly impressed by their knowledge. They have internal pipelines that analyze petabytes of geospatial data similar to us, so it was a natural fit to be able to talk shop with other engineers solving similar problems,” said Marie Hoeger, Staff Software Engineer at Pachama. Woolpert’s technical expertise has helped Pachama refine its models, optimize cloud usage, and enhance the speed and accuracy of its carbon market insights.
The Solution
Pachama partnered with Woolpert Digital Innovations to integrate GEE and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) into their workflows. This enabled Pachama to monitor landscapes, assess project viability, and track carbon impact. GCP’s AI and machine learning tools power Pachama’s dynamic baseline methodology, which determines what would happen to a landscape without intervention.
These insights are already in use by the Symbiosis Coalition, a major carbon removal initiative backed by Google, Meta, Salesforce, and Microsoft. As the coalition selects projects for its 20 million ton carbon removal commitment, Pachama’s DMRV (Digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) insights play a critical role in evaluation.
Woolpert optimized Pachama’s cloud infrastructure, improving data processing efficiency and reducing unnecessary compute costs, allowing for faster, more cost-effective carbon project assessments.
